Ōtautahi Christchurch laces up to ‘Run for a Reason’
Community run invites Cantabrians to move for mental health and recovery from addiction this September

Ōtautahi Christchurch – 21 September 2025
Falling within Recovery Month and ahead of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (6-12 October), Run for a Reason is inviting the Ōtautahi Christchurch community to walk, jog, or run in celebration, memory or support of a loved one.

Hosted by The Speed Freaks – a not-for-profit that supports recovery through running, walking and community connection – the event offers a welcoming space for everyone. Participants will have 90 minutes to complete as many laps as they wish on the Ngā Puna Wai track, with clearly marked fast, slow, and “walk and talk” lanes ensuring everyone finds their pace.

This year’s theme is simple but powerful:

Run to remember. Run to show your support. Run to celebrate the magic of recovery.”

Make it yours

Participants are encouraged to write the name of someone they’re honouring on their bib in place of their own – to honour that person’s journey and challenge the stigma that still exists around addiction and mental distress.

“This isn’t about personal bests or finish lines,” explains Anna Christophorou, founder of the Speed Freaks not-for-profit which has grown its groups across the country since establishing in 2021. The Speed Freaks are not anonymous, their iconic t-shirt courageously shares journeys of recovery supported by volunteers and local communities.

“It’s about showing up for each other. Every name on a bib tells a story. Every step challenges stigma and opens up the possibility of brave conversations.”

With 50-80% of New Zealanders likely to experience mental distress or addiction in their lifetime – and one in five facing such challenges each year – Run for a Reason is a call to action to support and celebrate those on the path to recovery and remember loved ones who have died through addiction or by suicide.  It also offers hope! Hope of a brighter future built on understanding, inclusivity and connection.

The money raised from the event will help support the powerful mahi taking place across the region. In return, The Speed Freaks crew will be bringing their usual positive vibes; filling the event with upbeat tunes, fun dress ups, creative face paint, awesome spot prizes and inspiring stories of recovery.
