A new Special Interest Group (SIG) network has launched in Aotearoa, aiming to connect all sectors with an interest in eating disorders (ED).

It’s designed for practitioners from both public and private sectors, the CPSLE workforce (consumer, peer support, and lived experience), researchers, professionals within the general health sector, government departments, and NGOs.

Together with Hayley Guinness, Director of Stepping Stones Therapy, I’ve launched a special interest group initiative. Our aim is to foster a collaborative environment and enhance support across the ED and multi-sector landscape.

A unified approach

Recognising the potential for isolation and the need for a unified approach, we believe the monthly hui (meetings) will provide a vital space for this diverse collective to collaborate on client offerings, identify service gaps, and brainstorm innovative solutions.

A crucial aim is to raise wider health sector and government awareness of the significant public health implications of eating difficulties. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance collective knowledge and improve support for tangata whai ora (people seeking wellness) and their whānau (families).

The inaugural hui, held recently, was met with enthusiasm, underscoring the value of bringing together such a broad range of perspectives from different operational contexts.

Strength in inclusivity

A core principle for us remains ensuring inclusivity. The SIG is committed to acting as a bridge—connecting diverse voices across disciplines

  • Research areas
  • Cultural backgrounds
  • Government bodies
  • Community organisations
  • Public and private sectors throughout Aotearoa.
We’re actively seeking input from all stakeholders to shape the SIG's future direction. This collaborative approach aims to build a network grounded in shared purpose and cultural humility, reflecting the unique Te Ao Māori (Māori world view) context of Aotearoa.
